Engineering the online admission portal for a Ministry-backed university

The challenge

Nalanda University — India's historical seat of learning, reestablished under the Ministry of External Affairs — needed a national online admission portal that could handle the full application lifecycle. Applications, document verification, eligibility scoring, entrance-exam scheduling, payment, seat allocation. The existing workflow was paper and email, which couldn't scale to the applicant volume or meet the security expectations of a Ministry-affiliated institution.

Our approach

We built the portal on Laravel with a React admin console for the university staff. The constraints shaped everything: full data residency in Indian AWS regions, integration with India's Aadhaar-based identity verification, and role-based access for admissions officers, department heads, and MEA auditors. We treated the audit trail as a first-class concern from day one — every user action, every admission decision, every document view had to be loggable, immutable, and queryable by a compliance team.

Results

The admissions cycle is now fully digital. Every application decision has a complete, queryable audit trail. The system has run two full admission cycles without a single data breach or compliance exception flagged by the MEA. The university has since expanded the portal's scope to cover additional programs and scholarship administration.
